Impossible Wind
A sphere covered in tiny weather vanes tries to agree on one smooth wind. It can never quite succeed. The remaining defects become storm eyes, throwing sheets of living light across a world you can turn in your hand.
The obstruction is the engine
On a flat sheet, enough local alignment can comb every arrow into one direction. A sphere is different. The hairy-ball theorem says that a continuous tangent vector field on a sphere must vanish somewhere. Impossible Wind turns that obstruction into a source of motion: where neighbouring winds cannot be made coherent, the cell becomes a pacemaker.
This is still a finite deterministic automaton, not a fluid simulation. The globe is an icosahedron subdivided into hundreds or thousands of sites. Every site has a twelve-direction wind, one bit of chirality, one of four refractory rhythms and a pulse age. All sites update simultaneously from their immediate neighbours.
The four movements
Carry, then listen
A neighbour's arrow is parallel-transported across the curved surface before comparison. The cell measures a truly local consensus.
Turn one click
The vane turns at most 30° toward that consensus. A tied half-turn is resolved by its chirality, so no global compass is hidden in the rule.
Frustration ignites
A rested cell flashes when local coherence falls below 44%, or when an odd number of neighbouring fronts arrives. The flash also kicks its vane.
Collisions rewrite time
Two or more fronts meeting a rested cell flip chirality and shift its refractory rhythm among 9, 11, 13 and 15 beats.
Order can spread. Perfect order cannot.
The automaton can move its visible strain, split its fronts and braid their light, but local smoothing must concentrate disagreement somewhere. The Topology view reveals the cost directly as bright strain around the storm eyes.
Experiments worth trying
- Start with Two impossible eyes, turn off camera drift and rotate the globe until both poles have crossed the limb.
- Choose Equatorial schism and switch to Topology view. The apparent calm hides a bright great-circle fault.
- Use Comb to make one hemisphere agree. The disturbance does not disappear; it is pushed around the far side.
- Paint several fronts with Lightning. Odd meetings pass through; even meetings rewrite the cells they strike.
- Turn on the atmosphere. Longitude, collision density and global order become a slowly shifting three-note chord.
What is established, and what is ours
The topological premise is classical, and spherical lattices are active areas of research. Work on the XY model on a spherical Fibonacci lattice demonstrates unavoidable vortices, while a spherical lattice-gas study found curvature-driven bubbles and vortices absent from its planar version. Impossible Wind's twelve-direction alignment, odd-front ignition and collision-written four-rhythm atmosphere were designed for this site. The theorem motivates the rule; it is not used as an inflated claim that every discrete configuration is mathematically forbidden from looking uniform.
